The Helm Station

This is the bridge deck, a favorite gathering place while cruising. The helm station is a perfect blend of original craftsmanship and modern usability—the wooden wheel, brass binnacle compass, and classic controls remain unchanged, while hidden updates ensure reliable navigation. The settee on the starboard side offers a comfortable place to sit, talk, or take in the view. The engine is housed beneath the deck, keeping noise levels low so guests can enjoy the ride. The rolled-up canvas sunshades (visible on the port side) provide relief on bright summer days. Behind the wicker chair, the mahogany door leads down to the forward cabin, which serves as a private retreat while underway. This space was designed for both practicality and enjoyment, making it easy to pilot the boat while staying connected with guests. A Lifetime of Expert Care

This photo shows the Dowager moored in Ithaca, right outside the shop of Cayuga Wooden Boatworks, where she was restored between 1998 and 2002 and then maintained by the same professionals. Keeping a classic wooden boat in Bristol condition for decades requires skill, consistency, and attention to detail—and thanks to this expert care, The Dowager’s hull and systems remain in exceptional shape. Each winter, The Dowager was raised onto beams above her slip using a ceiling-mounted crane—a careful process designed to keep her hull dry and well-preserved. This method prevented prolonged water exposure, reducing the risks of swelling (which can lead to damaging shrinkage as the wood dries) and wood fiber deterioration—common challenges in older wooden boats. In 2023, The Dowager’s bottom was painted, and she was carefully moved to Clayton, NY, where she remains in protected storage at Antique Boats America. This ensures prospective buyers can easily inspect her in person. Kept out of the elements, The Dowager is a truly extraordinary find—a classic wooden yacht with a documented history of expert care and preservation.

Hull #11247, first known as Balmina, spent 30 years in the waters of Long Island, with a 180 hp gas engine that reportedly allowed the boat to plane.

In the 1960's, the Bailey family renamed it Dowager, brought it north to the Finger Lakes, and repowered it with a 100hp diesel engine.

In 1998, George Howell, a renowned preservationist, made possible an extraordinary restoration. Dennis Montgomery and his team at Cayuga Wooden Boats, Ithaca, NY, rebuilt and restored the boat between October of 1998 and spring of 2002. For the next two decades, the Howell family enjoyed the boat on Cayuga Lake, while the Dowager was kept in covered moorage at Cayuga Wooden Boatworks (now  Finger Lakes Boating Center), and was professionally monitored and maintained by the team that rebuilt her. Then about two years ago, Dowager was moved to an indoor storage facility in Clayton, NY so the boat can be protected from the elements, and viewed by prospective new owners.

"....The list goes on but our mission became clear; make it safe and comfortable with modern amenities but keep it as original as possible. Up until now the project was an extensive restoration but now it became apparent when it came down to the ship’s systems that we were designing and building a brand new boat!"
